New University of Reading Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence MSc Course

Wednesday, March 23, 2022

The Walker Institute alongside Department of Meteorology, Department of Computer Science, and the triple-accredited Henley Business School are offering a new Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence MSc.  This is the first, and currently only, postgraduate course of its kind in the UK.  It will equip participants to meet the growing demand for professionals with understanding of how AI can be applied to climate change, together with the business acumen to deploy that understanding effectively.

A rapidly growing subject, artificial intelligence is transforming how we collect and use data. It has the potential to help solve and understand complex global challenges, including the climate crisis. The MSc has been developed for graduates from a wide range of disciplines – including science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) subjects – who are looking for a postgraduate qualification that will help them stand out in the job market. It is for individuals who want to improve their understanding of climate science and AI techniques, and be prepared for current – or future – managerial responsibilities.

The programme, for which the first intake will be later this year, will explore a variety of core modules, such as:

  • The Science of Climate Change
  • Applied Data Science with Python
  • Managing People and Organisations
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Climate Change: Values, Ethics and Justice.

Throughout the course, participants will develop an understanding of the programming language Python, as well as key management and communication skills.  They will also expand their knowledge of climate science, AI and machine learning, engaging with these subjects through an ethical perspective and thinking critically about questions of values and justice.

Further information:

  • Addressing climate change, one of the most pressing challenges of our time, requires a range of skills, one of these being AI. We know that the climate is changing and will continue to change, and we know quite a lot about how that could progress, but there is much uncertainty.  Making decisions in the presence of that uncertainty requires the ability to generate actionable information from the bringing together of data from multiple sources, and combining it with physical understanding.
  • The University of Reading is delivering a unique new MSc course in Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The course is designed to address the growing demand for people who have the scientific understanding of our changing climate and artificial intelligence, together with the business acumen to deploy that understanding effectively.  This complementary combination of disciplines – drawing expertise from the Department of Meteorology, Department of Computer Science, the Walker Institute and the triple-accredited Henley Business School – offers the first, and currently only, postgraduate course of its kind in the UK.
  • Modules include cutting-edge practical sessions where students will learn by doing. Together with bespoke projects, many carried out together with industry, students will gain deep insight into how AI and machine learning can be applied to develop real-world solutions to the challenges arising from climate change. This course will equip you with multidisciplinary experience and skills to help you progress into further study or employment, be that in the climate science/AI sectors or elsewhere, including industries such as education, transport, energy, finance and health sectors.
  • Students will join a global community of scientists committed to pushing the frontiers of knowledge, understanding and action. The University of Reading is actively engaged in tackling the challenges of climate change and making a global impact.  It has been awarded a prestigious 2021 Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of world-leading research, teaching, stewardship and outreach on climate change.  The course has an excellent staff-student ratio and your learning will benefit from the most recent innovations and developments across climate, computer and data science, together with business and management.
  • Reading is located in the Thames Valley area, a major tech hub in the UK, and the University has strong engagement and links with a range of companies. The Thames Valley area is a hotbed in IT – machine learning, data science and AI – with companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and Cisco local to the University. Studying in an area attracting some of the most sought after talent in the UK, you’ll have the chance to connect with like-minded individuals at the forefront of new developments in the subject.  Reading is also home to the Thames Valley AI Hub (TVAI Hub), which has a network of over 1,200 members. The TVAI Hub pulls together the area's incredible AI and machine learning community of academics, researchers, technologists, clinicians and business strategists and enables everyone to learn, collaborate, share knowledge, and develop business opportunities and partnerships.
  • Scholarships are available for entry in 2022. Applicants to the MSc Climate Change and AI are eligible to apply University of Reading Master’s Scholarships 2022 offered by Meteorology; further details are available at reading.ac.uk/scholarships
