Health in its broadest sense has been defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as ‘a state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ The adjective ‘healthy’ can equally be applied to individuals, communities, environments and even cities.
As our climate changes, there will be profound impacts on health, and in order to support sustainable development of communities, this is an area which research need to address.
For the Walker Institute, health is one of our dominant themes, bringing together many strands of our work into environmental change and stress, food security, community wellbeing and social factors, particularly within some of the most disadvantaged societies in Africa.
