The Global Awareness Report Risk Atlas (GAR Atlas) is a landmark interactive atlas that exposes the hidden threats posed by natural hazards in national economies and countries' urban centres.
The Atlas provides a global vision of where and how disaster risk can undermine development. It estimates the probability of future disaster losses in the built environment for five major hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, river flooding, tropical cyclones, and wind and storm surge) for every country and territory in the world.
The GAR Atlas has been launched as an online version, an application, and a print format with augmented reality icons.
It is based on the finding of UNISDR's series of biennial reports on risk. It builds on the Global Risk Model developed by UNISDR and its partners over the years by using the robust metrics developed by the international modeling team, such as Average Annual Loss and Probable Maximum Loss.
Disaster Risk Reduction is becoming an increasingly important through initiatives such as the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, Sustainable Development Goals 2015, and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In response to this changing global landscape, the Disaster Risk Reduction Symposium will be a unique opportunity to discuss, debate, inform and progress the development of law, policy and practice governing DRR and disasters at the national, regional and international levels.
