Our UPGro colleagues were at the African Water Association Congress (AfWA) in February, whilst there they had the opportunity to interview Dr Paul Orengoh, Director of Programs at African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), about the new Pan-African Groundwater Program, APAGroP.
The APAGroP was launched at an Experts’ and Stakeholders’ Workshop in Nairobi in October 2019, following more than a decade of high-level discussions. This program aims to be the go to repository on issues of Groundwater in Africa. With partners from researchers, practitioners, private sector and donor agencies, they are aiming to pool the vast amount of fragmented research on groundwater and work with AMCOW member states as they sustainably develop their groundwater policies and resources.
Dr Orengoh said "Groundwater holds the promise for Africa's economic development... increasing population, land use change, climate change and dwindling water resources all require sustainable use of groundwater to achieve our development"
